Rococo

The Game of Chess by Arturo Ricci

Ricci was an Italian painter, 1854-1919, who worked primarily on pre-revolutionary aristocratic family life. His patrons included the wealthy class that profited from Industrialization.

I love the design details on the door, table, and petticoats. The colors here are exquisite. I've always wanted to learn how to play chess, but it seems super complex and intimidating. I'll stick with checkers for now.

These beautiful pictures were sent to me by _torreshugo_ and I love them! 🤗 It shows Madame Victoire’s bedchamber. This room was once the Ionic Antechamber in the Bath Chambers, named for its decoration of twelve marble columns. It then became a Second Antechamber for the Count of Toulouse, the Countess of Toulouse, Madame Adélaïde, and lastly the youngest Mesdames, before becoming Madame Sophie’s chamber in 1767 and Madame Victoire’s chamber in 1769. The fine woodwork was made by Antoine Rousseau and the variegated taffeta hangings in the alcove are reminiscent of Madame Victoire’s “summer furnishings”. The two corner cupboards were delivered by Péridiez in 1769 but were later sold off during the Revolution. The dominant colour of the bedchamber is a soft green mixed with a white pattern. What do you think about this room? ⚜🕊

A 6 meters Putto Diving platform👼🏻 💦
What fascinates me about this detail from Ettal Abbey is the „sprezzatura“ of the interior. It is an Italian term in art history to point out that specific quality of art which looks done easily and in passing, but it’s very elaborate.
.
.
.
The bio-morph balustrade with its organic forms applicated is the perfect diving platform for a putto who tries to hold balance on the edge of a rocaille form. It’s this moment of climax, when I am waiting that the small angel moves and jumps into a sized stucco splash 💦
.

.
Two absolute masters are responsible for the splashy stucco here: Johann Georg Übelher and Franz Xaver Schmuzer (mid of 18th Century).

Looking in a Mirror by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun

This is a portrait of her daughter, Julie Le Brun. Madame Le Brun was an accomplished portrait painter in 18th century France. She worked professionally starting in her early teens. She eventually became one of only 15 women given full membership in Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. She is well known for her paintings of Marie Antoinette and her self portraits.
Madame Le Brun blended many styles to create her work like neoclassicism and rococo. She was also influenced by Dutch artists. During the French Revolution, she fled with her youngest daughter and used it as an opportunity to travel and learn.

I love how she used a mirror to show her full face. It makes a statement of reality vs illusion and our perspective in the world. It's also just simply a sweet moment of a young girl looking in the mirror.

Choosing Fabric by Prudent Louis Leray

He was born in 1820 and died 1879. Leray worked as a painter and lithographer in France. Compared with other artists we've looked at so far, Leray began his art studies rather late. He studied at a fine arts school after finishing college and presented at his first salon at the age of 28. He enjoyed genre painting and his delicate techniques suited this style.

I absolutely love this painting. The silks are so accurate in texture. I especially like the lighting. Fabric was usually the most expensive element in a new ensemble. Milliners and seamstresses only received a small portion of the total cost in a garment. It was truly an investment to have a new outfit made, so the fabric would be cut in a way that would allow for reuse when styles, sizes, and wearers changed or they pieced parts with less valuable textiles.

Silence by Jean-Baptiste Greuze

Greuze was a French painter living from 1725-1805. He showed talent at an early age, but was discouraged by his father. It was his mentor that supported his goals of studying art. He followed his own inspirations for his work, realizing the pressures to follow trends weren't always fruitful. He faced opposition when academies wanted to accept him as a genre painter rather than a historical painter like he wanted. Greuze died in poverty from bad money management.

I think it's important to recognize that he constantly fought to do what he loved in the way he wanted, not how someone else thought he should. I love this painting because it is so typical of motherhood. You finally get the little ones to sleep and another kid comes in with a toy trumpet.

Title: The Blue Boy (1770)⠀
Artist: Thomas Gainsborough⠀
Style: Rococo⠀
FYI: An expert in portraits and landscapes, Gainsborough’s painting may be a costume study due to its very detailed depiction of boy’s clothing. The little boy is standing in the popular style of contrapposto, a pose used since the time of the Renaissance. The true inspiration for using the regal-yet-relaxed look was borrowed from 17th-century Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck. In one of his hands, he is holding a plumed hat that was popular in the 18th century. He is clothed in shiny, silky clothing with a big mountain slope with trees in the background. A dark sky surrounds the boy’s body in the romanticism style. As a costume study, Gainsborough has depicted the clothes with great attention including every crease. The shoes have some decorative cloth-flowering which was normal during the time; little boys under the age of 8 wore girly frocks and dresses as the main attire. In this painting, there is a shift from feminine attire to more masculine. The overcoat, cape in hand, leggings (over the knees), and stockings (under the knee) were all worn by men. The confident stance of the boy and plumed hat are also a demonstration of the boy’s transition from boyhood to manhood.⠀
🤔Gainsborough may have chosen blue to spite his rival, Sir Joshua Reynolds, who believed that ‘blue, the grey, or the green colours be kept almost entirely out of these masses and be used only to support or set off warm colours.’ ⠀

“Marianne Celeste Dragon”, painted by José Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza, 1795🥀

Marianne Celeste Dragon was the first Greek to be born in the US, specifically in New Orleans, back on March 1st, 1777, when Louisiana was still a French colony under Spanish rule. She descended from white and Cajun/Native American ancestry. - information taken from greek_american_girl (there is a wonderful short biography about Marianne in her blog, linked in her Instagram bio✨)

“Salazar was born in Mérida, Yucatan, Mexico, and studied at the Academy in Mexico City. He moved to New Orleans in 1782. Salazar painted many of Colonial Louisiana's prominent citizens, figures associated with the government, the military, and the church. Prominent sitters include Dr. Joseph Montegut and his family, Don Almonaster y Rojas, Ignacio Balderas and his wife, and Bishop Luis Ignatius Cardenas y Peñalver, He is not known to have painted in other cities in the U.S. before his death in 1802. Well-versed in the late Baroque style popular in Spanish colonies, Salazar was the first significant painter to work in New Orleans.” - quote from the Louisiana State Museum Collections

Title: The Graham Children (1742)⠀
Artist: William Hogarth⠀
Style: Rococo⠀
FYI: Hogarth uses various objects to tell us about the children. An extravagant baby carriage sits beside an elaborate silver dish full of fruit with some crossed carnations (funeral flowers) meant to be a memento mori. Though the baby, Thomas, seems lively, the baby had already died while Hogarth was working on the painting. Thomas is seen reaching to grasp the cherries from his sister’s hand (symbolizes the fruit of paradise). A table-clock of a cherub holding an hour-glass and scythe (symbols of death) shows the time to be 1:45 pm, maybe the hour Thomas died. Underneath the goldfinch is Richard who balances a bird organ on his knee and little Anna Maria starts dancing, holding out her silky brocade skirt. The side of the organ is decorated with a scene of Orpheus and his lyre. The eldest daughter, Henrietta, guides her lost baby brother’s hand towards the cherries while her long muslin apron is tucked over her arm, falling in an s-curve (embodying Hogarth’s ‘line of beauty).⠀
🤔The children are the children of Daniel Graham, the Royal Apothecary to King Geroge I and King George II. This painting is one of the largest paintings Hogarth ever painted with the children are portrayed in life-size.⠀

Gossip on the Stairs by Otto Wilhelm Eduard Erdmann

This German painter lived from 1834-1905. He pursued work as an amateur actor, journal illustrator, and specialized in the Rococo revival style of painting.

I love how the lines of the stair case draw my eyes to the right area; that was a smart technique. This piece makes me stop and imagine and I think that is special. What are they discussing? Who are they? How will their conversation impact what happens later?

The Catherine Palace is a Rococo palace located in the town of Tsarskoye Selo. It was the summer residence of the Russian tsars. Construction ended in 1756, when the palace included 40 state apartments, and more than 100 private and service rooms. A New Garden was added, while the Old Garden was improved with a deepening of the Big Pond. Baroque architecture gave way to Neoclassical architecture in the 1770s. All the stucco details sparkled with gold until 1773, when Catherine II (1729-1796) had gilding replaced with olive drab paint. The palace has distinctive snow-white columns, sky-blue walls, with gilded stucco, chapel cupolas, and sculptures which required almost 100 kg of gold. What do you think about this beautiful palace? ⚜🕊

Louis-Auguste de France, Louis XVI, who was given the title Duc de Berry at birth, was born in the Palace of Versailles. One of seven children, he was the second surviving son of Louis, the Dauphin of France, and Marie-Josèphe of Saxony. Louis-Auguste was overlooked by his parents who favored his older brother, Louis, duc de Bourgogne, but he died at the age of 9. Louis-Auguste, a strong and healthy boy but very shy, excelled in his studies and had a strong taste for Latin, history, geography, and astronomy and became fluent in Italian and English. He enjoyed physical activities such as hunting with his grandfather and rough play with his younger brothers. From an early age, Louis-Auguste was encouraged in another of his interests, locksmithing, which was seen as a useful pursuit for a child. Painted by Jean-Martial Fredou(1710-1796), ca. 1760. ⚜🕊

Looking at the New Chambers of Sanssouci today, it’s hard to imagine that these rooms started out as a modest orangery. In 1768, King Friedrich II, a.k.a. the Great, decided to turn the orangery adjoining Schloss Sanssouci into his second guest palace. Due to its proximity to his own home, Schloss Sanssouci, the New Chambers were mainly intended for close friends and acquaintances of the King. • #neuekammern #potsdamgram #hohenzollern #rococo #splendour #castleblogger #schlössersafari #schlösserundburgen #schlösserliebe #castle #castlegram #castlehunting #castleadventures #schlossliebe #castlephotography #castleaddict #castles_oftheworld #manor_n_castle #architecture_hunter #churchesandcastles #europeanroyalpalaces #traveling_arte #vivoartworld #timeless_unlimited ...

Rococo splendour is the best term to describe the picture gallery of the Residenz , the former city palace of the kings of Bavaria in Munich. The so-called Green Gallery was built in 1731-33 after a design by the Belgian architect François de Cuvilliés, who interestingly came to notice of the Bavarian Prince-Elector as court dwarf.

Portrait of Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Campan, who was the first chambermaid, in effect, head of household, for the beautiful Queen Marie Antoinette. Picture posted and fine bio of Madame Campan by trianon_1793

To this fine bio, I would add, the most literate Madame Campan, was also an important author. She penned the two volume book, Memoirs Of The Court Of Marie Antoinette,
Queen Of France, Complete, by Madame Campan

Her preface concludes –

“Destiny having formerly placed me near crowned heads, I now amuse my solitude when in retirement with collecting a variety of facts which may prove interesting to my family when I shall be no more. The idea of collecting all the interesting materials which my memory affords occurred to me from reading the work entitled “Paris, Versailles, and the Provinces in the Eighteenth Century.” That work, composed by a man accustomed to the best society, is full of piquant anecdotes, nearly all of which have been recognised as true by the contemporaries of the author. I have put together all that concerned the domestic life of an unfortunate Princess, whose reputation is not yet cleared of the stains it received from the attacks of calumny, and who justly merited a different lot in life, a different place in the opinion of mankind after her fall. These memoirs, which were finished ten years ago, have met with the approbation of some persons; and my son may, perhaps, think proper to print them after my decease.”
J. L. H. C.

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/3891/3891-h/3891-h.htm
The book was published in 1823, a year after Madame Campan’s death.

A portrait of Charles of Bourbon (1748-1819), as the prince of Asturias, later King Charles IV of Spain. He was also called the prince of Taranto, after Naples and Sicily were he lived. He had a preference for sport and hunting, rather than dealing with affairs of state. He was considered to be amiable but simple minded. He was married to Maria Luisa of Parma (1751-1819) in 1765 and the pair had 14 children, of whom 7 survived to adulthood. They both died the same year in Italy. This painting was made by Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1179), ca. 1764. In the 1760s, he made a series of portraits of the Spanish nobility. What do you think about this beautiful painting? ⚜🕊

The grand salon, at Musée Nissim de Camondo. The furniture was made by Georges Jacob in the 18th century and is in the style of Louis XVI (1754-1793). The central carpet was delivered by the manufacture of the Savonnerie in 1678 for the Grande Galerie du Louvre. Several pieces of furniture were owned by well known people like Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette. Paintings made by Vigee-lebrun and Drouais adorn the beautiful boiseries wallpanels. What do you think of this room? ⚜🕊

(continues from yesterday)

One of the problems I am going to solve is lack of imagination. 🍓

I have to stop demanding to my customers to be as imaginative as I am. You’re coming to me because that’s my skill! And over the years I’ve noticed that it’s much easier for you to purchase something you’ve seen, than something I have made a sketch of. You need to see how the garment works. But even more how the garment can be set into its own world and how it can live. 🧚🏾
